If the designer is expecting people to use a power strip with an on/off switch why even bother with a power switch at all?Ī switch is meant to be used, no matter what way you look at it or what problems it solves, putting a switch where it can't be used isn't good design, good design would solve both problems, this isn't an aerospace problem is it? It means the manufacturer is keeping the switch close to the power transformer in order to avoid running the power through the machine.įrankAnd why couldn't it simply be shielded? It's done to stop the power lines from travelling past the audio lines because it adds noise to the output. I understand you're one of them - so by all means, continue to just buy gear with the on/off switch in the front.įor the rest of us, it means the designer is taking every step possible to provide us with gear with a low noise floor and so a power strip with an on/off switch will suffice. Of course some people would rather have convenience in exchange for some noise in their signal. When you see a switch in the back, it means the designer actually cares about the noise floor of his product and generally a lot of higher priced rack gear will have the switch in the back because people who pay a few grand for gear generally worry about the noise floor. It means the manufacturer is keeping the switch close to the power transformer in order to avoid running the power through the machine. but it just doesn't make any sense. It's actually very good design. It's like putting the door handle for the front seat of a luxury car in the trunk, it doesn't matter how nice the car is, that's still dumb as hell.Īnd yes there are plenty of things with the on/off switch on the back. Doesn't matter if it's good and/or expensive, it doesn't justify bad design.
